Suit jacket sizing can be broken down into two sections. The chest size, in inches, and the length of the jacket. A 40R tag is ideal for a gentleman with a 38-40 inch chest, and an average height. A man with a 50 inch chest who is quite tall would choose a 50L.
Jacket length comes in three sizes, being S for short, R for regular and L for long. If you’re looking at a suit jacket size and it doesn’t mention a length size, it was only made in a single length and doesn’t have variants. Men shorter than 5’6” look best in S jackets, men taller than 6’1” suit L jackets and in between heights look best in the regular (R) jacket length.
What size suit trousers am I? A question we hear often. Your trouser size is dependent on the size of your waist, but also how comfortable you want to be. You want to be able to sit, stand, dance, cheer and celebrate in your trousers without feeling cramped, nor worrying about your pants splitting.
The tag on a pair of trousers will usually have two numbers. The first, a waist measurement, and the second, the length of an in-seam. The second number is less important, as a tailor like the one at Briggins can easily adjust this to suit your height. For example, a 40R tag is ideal for a gentleman with a 38–40 inch waist, whereas a man with a 30 inch waist would choose a 30R. Both gentlemen could then have their tailor adjust the length to suit exactly.
To find your suit jacket size, you want to measure around your chest at the widest point. Remember to take this size in inches. Round this size up to the nearest even number, and you’ve got your suit jacket size! It really is as easy as that.
To find your trouser size, lay out your favourite suit pant or non-stretchy pant. Once these are flat, do them up at the waist and measure across the waistband from left to right. Take this number, multiply it by 2, remember to take this measurement in inches, and you have the full measurement aka the first number found on trouser tags. If you want your inseam, measure the inside leg seam from crotch to hem.
